Acceptable Medications For Pregnancy

WHAT MEDICATIONS ARE SAFE DURING PREGNANCY?

It would be best if you needed no medications during your pregnancy other than vitamins. However, it’s usually better to take medications than to suffer with an illness in pregnancy.

Pain, Headache or Fever

  • Call us if your fever is over 101.0
  • DO NOT TAKE  Aspirin, Advil, Aleve or Ibuprofen
  • Tylenol (Acetaminophen) is the drug of choice for pain or fever. Take one-two every 4 hours as needed. You may use regular, extra strength, or PM (has Benadryl in it to help you fall asleep easier).

Cold/Respiratory Flu Symptoms

  • Rest, fluids and a humidifier can rid you of many symptoms
  • Cough: Robitussin or Mucinex (Guaifenesin), any cough drops or throat sprays are okay
  • Congestion: during the day Sudafed and Claritin are non drowsy, Benadryl can be used at night because it can make you sleepy, saline nasal sprays and the Neti pot can be used
  • Vaporub or heating pads may also sooth aching muscles
  • Tylenol Multisymptom or Cold/Flu have a combination of the above products just make sure you are not taking multiple products with the same medications in it

Gastrointestinal Symptoms

  • If you have a 24-48 stomach flu/virus you should increase your fluids, rest, and take Tylenol if necessary
  • Nausea : a clear liquid diet and eating popsicles may help
  • Diarrhea: Kaopectate
  • Constipation: Dulcolax or Colace stool softener , Metamucil, Miralax, lots of fluids, and exercise
  • If you are unable to keep fluids down or if you are unable to eat/drink without vomiting for more than one day, you should call the office
  • Indigestion/Heartburn: Tums, Pepcid Complete, Mylanta, Maalox, Gaviscon, Rolaids

Yeast Infections

  • Over the counter yeast creams/inserts which contain miconazole such as Monistat
  • The best kind provides both a cream/ovule which is inserted into the vagina, plus an extra tube of cream to apply to the outside of the vagina for relief from external itching and irritation
  • In pregnancy the 7 day treatment is most effective

Hemorrhoids

  • An over the counter cream such as Preparation H or other generics applied several times a day to the hemorrhoid for relief from irritation
  • Tucks Pads (generic Witch Hazel)
  • If your hemorrhoids are bleeding and do not seem to be improving with over the counter medications call the office

This list is not meant to be comprehensive. Remember if you have questions about a specific medication or the medications above are not working for you, call the office.
